01 Feb How can I get motivated to exercise?
Does your workout routine consist of running for the bus or streetcar, lifting textbooks and stretching out on the couch?
It can be difficult to regularly visit the gym while in school, but now that classes are ending and summer is on the horizon, you might be thinking about giving your brain a rest and getting your body moving. The only problem is you don’t have much motivation to begin exercising.
This is a common problem that many people struggle with. If finding the will to sweat three times a week were easy, we’d all be fit. But there are some things you can do to help you get motivated.
1) Set realistic goals
Start with small goals so you aren’t immediately discouraged. Then progress to bigger goals as exercise becomes part of your everyday routine. You can promise to do something as easy as go for a walk for half an hour every other day. Then, after a week or two, try jogging for five minutes and walking the rest of the way. Eventually you’ll be able to jog your entire walking route.
2) Buy new workout clothing
When you look good, you feel good, and buying new stylish workout gear can give you that extra push you need to get to the gym and strut your stuff. Wearing flattering clothing can also increase your confidence, and as a result, your overall performance.
3) Get a friend to join you
You may not feel guilty cancelling plans to go to yoga class, but that all changes if your friend is expecting you to show up. Working out in pairs is a great idea because you can motivate each other to exercise – and you may end up working out for longer because you’re enjoying the social time you spend with your buddy. Bonus if you can link up with a friend who already has a dedicated routine established.
4) Create a boss playlist
Multiple studies have found that music not only distracts you from pain and fatigue, it also reduces perceived effort and can actually motivate you to work harder for longer. Create a playlist of high-energy songs that make you want to dance and blast it before and during your workout.
5) Make an ultimatum
Working out can suck sometimes, but there are worse things than sweating. And, you’ll almost never (in fact probably never) regret going to the gym after the fact. Why not create an ultimatum to make sure you get a workout in. For example:
*Workout or leave your hair unwashed until you do
*Work out or you can’t have any alcoholic drinks this weekend
*Workout or surrender your Netflix account to your friends so it will be impossible for you to log on
6) Download an app
Apps can keep you on track by sending you reminders about when it’s time to move. They also allow you to see the progress you’re making and enable you to share your progress with others. Whether you need friendly encouragement or constructive criticism, there’s anappout there for everyone.
