01 Feb What’s the best way to get rid of a zit?
There’s never a good time to get a zit – but they always seem to surface at the worst times. First dates, graduation photos and job interviews are just a few of their favourite occasions.
There is no magical cure for getting rid of a pimple, but there are definitely things you can do to minimize its appearance and speed up the time it takes to disappear.
Don’t squeeze it – Firstly, when you see a bright red pimple, whatever you do, resist the urge to squeeze it. That’s only going to make your skin worse and you increase the chances of infection or scarring.
See a dermatologist – Although this is not the most convenient solution, a dermatologist can help eliminate a pimple very quickly. He or she will inject the inflamed area with a low dose of cortisone, which can eliminate the zit within 24 hours.
Cool it off – Apply a cold wet cloth, or ice wrapped in a cloth for 3 to 5 minutes a few times throughout the day. This will reduce inflammation and irritation, and encourage oil glands to shrink and push out excess oil and bacteria from the irritated area.
Medicate it – Benzoyl peroxide kills the bacteria that helps create pimples. It comes in different concentrations, but a low dose of benzoyl peroxide concentration (around 2.5 per cent) will get the job done. If you have sensitive skin, try a medicated treatment that contains 1 to 2 per cent salicylic acid. It is gentler than benzoyl peroxide.
Use a cotton swab – If you can see a whitehead or blackhead protruding, take two cotton swabs and gently apply pressure. These won’t damage your skin the way your nails can. Applying a warm cloth to the zit beforehand will make the process easier as it will open up your pores.
Apply toothpaste – This sounds odd, but toothpaste is a cheap and easy remedy for zit removal. Toothpaste contains ingredients like baking soda and hydrogen peroxide that will dry the pimple out. Although many dermatologists won’t recommend this treatment over traditional acne medication, it can help if you need a fast overnight cure. It has to be the white toothpaste though, not gel.
Everyone gets zits from time to time, so don’t stress if one shows up. Additionally, there are a few things you can do to minimize your chances of breaking out. Clickherefor some ideas on how to prevent pimples from surfacing.
